What is REDD+?

The 16th Convention of the Parties (COP 16) of the UNFCCC (UNFCCC / COP 16, 2010) said that in the context of providing adequate support to developing countries, it is very important to reduce and reverse the loss of native forests, and encouraged developing countries to undertake the following activities:
  • Reducing emissions from deforestation
  • Reducing emissions from forest degradation
  • Conservation of forest carbon stocks
  • Sustainable forest management
  • Strengthening of forest carbon stocks
These actions represent the mechanism REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) which is defined as:
  • policies and positive incentives for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and increase in forest carbon stocks (including conservation and sustainable forest management) in developing countries
